The woman was among a group of four Chinese tourists visiting the Kham Thien section of the train street area to film passing trains at around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 7.
She sat close to the tracks with her phone in hand to record a video. As the train approached, the locomotive struck her, knocking the phone from her hand.
The woman was not injured, but her phone was damaged. She left the area shortly afterward.
On Aug. 11, local police said they had fined the coffee shop for violating the railway safety corridor by letting a customer sit dangerously close to the tracks, resulting in the collision.

Following the incident, the Hanoi Police Department’s Division for Administrative Management of Social Order instructed Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam Ward Police to deploy personnel to maintain security, traffic safety and public order in the area.
Hanoi Train Street, which runs through a narrow residential area, is popular with foreign tourists seeking to watch and photograph trains passing just meters from homes and businesses.
Some coffee shop owners have allowed customers to sit beside the tracks and have even stationed staff outside to look out for authorities. When officials are spotted, the staff quickly remove tables and chairs and move customers indoors.

In November 2025, local authorities conducted inspections, removed obstructions and dealt with violations of the railway safety corridor in the area.
Despite the enforcement efforts, some coffee shop owners continued to serve customers and place tables and chairs directly beside the tracks.
