Microsoft has alerted travelers about a new cyber attack, in which hackers are using hotel and public Wi-Fi networks as their weapon. That means, through the same Wi-Fi through which you are comfortably accessing the internet, your password, data and even your entire device can be in danger. According to Microsoft, this cyber campaign has been named 'CaptiveCrunch'. In this, hackers are targeting the Wi-Fi networks of hotels, conference centers and other public places. On such networks, you often have to login or accept certain rules before using the Internet. By taking advantage of this process, attackers can send users to a fake login page. Suppose you are connected to the hotel's Wi-Fi and Microsoft's login page opens in front of you. Everything will look absolutely real, but it may be a fake page created by hackers. As soon as you enter your email, password or other information, this data can reach the attackers directly.

But the threat is not limited to password theft. According to Microsoft, attackers can also send users to pages with fake software or browser updates. You will see on the screen that an update of your Windows, browser or any important software is necessary. If you click on that link and download the file, dangerous malware may get installed in your computer. A Windows-based Remote Access Trojan named 'Cornflake' has also been detected in this campaign. Once this malware reaches the device, it can give remote control to the attackers to a great extent. Through this, personal information like files and passwords can be stolen. It can even monitor what you are typing on the keyboard. What is most worrying is that this malware tries to hide in the system and can look like a legitimate Windows service or process. This means that the user will not immediately realize that his computer has come under someone else's control.

Microsoft has also cautioned Android users. In some cases, dangerous web pages may ask users to download and install APK files. If you install such a file without checking, then the mobile data can also be at risk. So next time you are connected to a hotel or any public Wi-Fi, do check before entering your sensitive information on the login page that suddenly opens. Do not download software updates from any pop-up and avoid installing unknown APK files. Because now the danger is not limited to fake links only. Your hotel's Wi-Fi itself can become a way for hackers to access your device.
