Kerala Name Change News Marathi: An important milestone has been completed today in the process of renaming Kerala. The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 has been passed in the Lok Sabha, paving the way for the official name of the state to be changed to 'Keralam' instead of 'Kerala'.
Where did the demand to change the name come from?
Kerala On June 24, 2024, the Legislative Assembly passed a resolution to change the name of the state from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam'. After that, the central government was demanded to make necessary changes in the first schedule of the constitution. 'Keralam' is the traditional name used for the state in the Malayalam language. Hence, this is said to be an attempt to make the official name of the state more compatible with the pronunciation of the local language.

Approval of Central Govt
The Union Cabinet on 24 February 2026 approved the proposal to rename Kerala as 'Keralam'. After that further steps were taken as per constitutional procedure.
How was the bill passed in the Lok Sabha?
The Bill was approved in the Lok Sabha on 11 August. At that time, there was an uproar from the MPs of the opposition parties. Therefore, it has been reported that the Bill was approved without any formal discussion.
Has the name change process been completed yet?
Lok Sabha Getting approval is an important step; But the name change will be officially implemented only after the final constitutional process is completed. The Bill requires the approval of both the Houses of Parliament, followed by the President's assent and official notification. The procedure for changing the names of states is under Article 3 of the Constitution. The central government has also mentioned the same constitutional process.
Why Kerala instead of Kerala?
'Keralam' is a local name in the Malayalam language. Therefore, the main objective behind this change is believed to be to connect the official identity of the state with local linguistic and cultural traditions. Many states and cities have been renamed in India in the past. Its examples are Mumbai of Bombay, Chennai of Madras and Odisha of Orissa.
