New Delhi, 11 August. 'Kerala (Change of Name) Bill, 2026' was passed by voice vote on Tuesday amid continuous sloganeering by opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha. This bill proposes to change the name of Kerala state to 'Keralaam'.
Nityanand Rai introduced the bill in the House
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced this bill in the House while the opposition MPs kept raising slogans demanding the presence and statement of Home Minister Amit Shah on the police action against NEET protesters on July 20.
Ruckus continued in the house
Krishna Prasad Teneti, who is presiding over the House, urged the opposition MPs to allow the House to function smoothly. However, the uproar continued. Nityanand Rai and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition for not discussing the bill changing the name of Kerala. Kiren Rijiju said, 'It is sad that even senior Congress leaders like KC Venugopal will not speak on this bill.'
Ultimately, when the uproar did not stop, the bill was passed by voice vote without any discussion. Earlier in February last, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the proposal to change the name of 'Kerala' to 'Keralaam'.
The name of the state in Malayalam is 'Kerala'
It is noteworthy that the Kerala Assembly had passed a proposal to change the name of 'Kerala' to 'Keralaam' on June 24, 2024. The resolution said, “The name of our state in Malayalam language is ‘Keralam’.”
The passed resolution said, “States were formed on the basis of language on November 1, 1956. 'Kerala Piravi Day' is also celebrated on November 1. Since the time of the country's independence struggle, there has been a strong demand for the formation of 'United Kerala' for the people speaking Malayalam language. However, the name of our state is recorded as 'Kerala' in the First Schedule of the Constitution. The Kerala Assembly unanimously appeals to the Central Government that “Take immediate steps to change the name to ‘Keralam’ under Article 3 of the Constitution.”
Subsequently, the Government of Kerala requested the Central Government to take necessary steps to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution to change the name of 'Kerala' to 'Keralam' under Article 3 of the Constitution.
