Huh, August 11th. Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel, who opened the innings for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been arrested in a criminal case registered on the complaint of a medical student. The student had alleged rape, criminal intimidation and other serious crimes.

Hooghly Rural Police SP Kunar Bhushan Singh said on Tuesday that the police arrested the cricketer from Emami City under Dum Dum police station. Earlier in June, the victim had filed a police complaint, alleging that the cricketer had physical relations with her after falsely promising marriage.

Bail not granted, Porel sent to police custody for three days

A court in Chinsurah refused to grant bail to Porel and sent him to three days' police custody. Kunar Bhushan Singh said, 'A case was registered against him and there was a court order to arrest him. He was arrested late last night. He was produced in the court today.

Porel was arrested by Mogra police from his house in Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas district. The arrest came after the Calcutta High Court on July 20 directed the police to arrest the cricketer in connection with the case.

The court also ordered the seizure of the electronic devices of the complainant to prevent dissemination of his photographs. Police have registered a case against Porel under various sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) as well as the Information Technology Act, police sources said.

A medical student from Karnataka had filed a complaint against Porel at Mogra police station on June 23, alleging that they were in a 'relationship' for about three-and-a-half years and were planning to get married.

The student also alleged that the two had traveled abroad together, but Porel later denied their relationship, following which she approached the police. According to the complaint, there was a dispute between the two about one and a half years ago, after which the matter reached the police station, but no complaint was registered at that time.

Action taken on the instructions of Calcutta High Court After June's complaint, the police started investigation and teams visited Porel's residence in Chandannagar several times, but he was not found there. The woman later approached the Calcutta High Court, following which the court directed the police to arrest Porel on July 20. Apart from rape charges, the cricketer also faces charges of criminal intimidation and other crimes. However, Porel had earlier denied the allegations.
