Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has said that his next job will be in club football, despite having held discussions with the KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) over the vacant Netherlands post.

Slot has been without a job since leaving Liverpool at the end of May, although he had earlier been mentioned as a surprise candidate for the Fulham role before Alvaro Arbeloa was appointed.

More recently, reports had indicated that Slot could become the next head coach of the Netherlands, replacing Ronald Koeman, who stepped down after the World Cup round-of-32 defeat to Morocco.

But amid claims that he had pulled out of talks with the KNVB because of a disagreement over his contract, Slot released a statement to clarify the situation.

“Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration,” he said in an interview with Voetbal International.

“That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.

“At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. That is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.

“And that is why I decided not to continue the talks and not to begin negotiations on what a possible contract might look like.

“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only speak positively about the professional way in which the talks were conducted that week.

“For now, I believe club football still has a great deal to offer me.

“It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me.”
