The continuous rise in gold prices is showing no sign of stopping. On August 12, gold prices were seen skyrocketing from the international market to the domestic bullion market. On Wednesday, gold in India reached its highest level in the last 10 weeks, while the price of silver also registered a rise of more than Rs 2,000 in early trade. Let us know why there has been such a sudden rise in the prices of gold and silver and whether there is still a buying opportunity left for you.
Tremendous rise in silver and gold at record of 10 weeks
According to All India Bullion Association, the price of silver in New Delhi has become costlier by Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,42,000 per kg, which is the highest level of silver in the last two months. At the same time, in the last 6 trading sessions alone, gold prices have increased by 6.65%. Gold has become costlier by Rs 9,800 in Delhi alone. Gold of 24 carat purity, which was being sold at Rs 1,47,400 per 10 grams on August 3, has increased to Rs 1,57,200 today.
Why did this rapid rise in gold suddenly return?
The huge rise in crude oil prices has created tremendous uncertainty in the bullion market. Brent crude has once again crossed $ 90 per barrel, creating a danger of inflation increasing. Due to oil becoming expensive, the US Federal Reserve's hands are tied and hopes of cutting interest rates are lost. High interest rates usually have a negative impact on gold, but this time the US-Iran tension and the fear of stopping the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has completely dominated it.
How did gold get stuck between Oil and Hormuz?
Shipping risks are increasing as the chances of opening the Strait of Hormuz are decreasing. Additionally, Houthi rebels have also increased tensions on maritime trade by targeting ships in the Red Sea. In such a situation, investors around the world are increasingly turning to gold as a safe haven. At present, two opposing forces are affecting gold, and investors are now eyeing the US CPI data, which will decide the next decision of the Federal Reserve.
What are the prices of gold and silver in India today?
According to the latest rates released on the website of India Bullion and Jewelers Association (IBJA), the prices of gold and silver of different purities are as follows:
- 24 karat gold: Rs 1,52,803 per 10 grams
- 22 carat gold: Rs 1,39,968 per 10 grams
- 18 karat gold: Rs 1,14,603 per 10 grams
- Silver (1 kg): Rs 2,35,352
How expensive has gold become so far this year?
So far in the year 2026, there has been a tremendous rise in the prices of both gold and silver. So far this year, gold has become costlier by about Rs 19,000. At the end of December 2025, the price of gold was above Rs 1.33 lakh per 10 grams, while silver was Rs 2.30 lakh per kg, which has now increased to beyond Rs 2.34 lakh.
However, it is a matter of relief that gold is still selling cheaper by about Rs 27,000 from its all-time high. On January 29 this year, the price of 10 grams of gold had reached Rs 1.79 lakh. Commodity expert Ajay Kedia believes that gold is still far below its record level, hence investors are continuously increasing money in it. According to him, this year gold can touch Rs 1.60 lakh and silver can touch Rs 2.80 lakh per kg. Experts advise that instead of investing money in lump sum, investing little by little is a better strategy.
Government made bumper earnings by increasing import duty
On May 13, the central government had increased the custom duty on gold import from 6% to 15%, the aim of which was to reduce the import of gold in the country and reduce the pressure on foreign exchange reserves. This move of the government was completely successful. Along with the decrease in imports, there has also been a tremendous increase in the government treasury. Between May 13 and August 2, the government has earned a bumper income of Rs 10,040 crore from gold import duty alone and Rs 328 crore from silver. Gold import in India has also declined by 6% to 131.4 tonnes during the April-June quarter, which clearly shows that the impact of government policies is clearly visible.
