TATA Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran Resigns: N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group, has resigned. This decision of Chandrasekaran has come just before the AGM of Tata Sons to be held on August 18. However, he will not leave this post immediately. His current tenure is till February 2027. Till then he will remain on the post of chairman. 63 year old Chandrasekaran has informed the board of Tata Sons about his decision.
N Chandrasekaran has tendered his resignation following differences with Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata. Noel Tata was against the extension of N Chandrasekaran's tenure. After this he has resigned. However, N Chandrasekaran will step down after completing his tenure.
Let us tell you that Chandrasekaran became the chairman of Tata Sons in 2017. He was the first professional manager from outside the Tata family to take charge of the group. During his tenure, Tata Group's revenue increased more than double. Chandrasekaran, who headed TCS, after taking charge of Tata Sons, took the group into new areas like aviation (acquisition of Air India), semiconductor, electronics manufacturing, battery and digital business. As a result, the group's revenue in FY 2020 was ₹ 7.89 lakh crore, which increased to ₹ 16.24 lakh crore in FY 2026. During this period, the group's net profit (PAT) increased from ₹32,000 crore to ₹1.71 lakh crore.
Differences between Chandrasekaran and Noel Tata
Differences had come to light between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts regarding the next tenure of Chandrasekaran. In February this year, the decision on making Chandrasekaran the chairman again was postponed. Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata had opposed his reappointment. Noel Tata wanted Tata Sons to never be listed on the stock market in future, but Chandrasekaran did not agree to this condition.
Suspense on AGM voting
At the same time, in the company's annual meeting (AGM) to be held on August 18, voting is to be held on Chandrasekaran's re-election as a director on the board. If he does not remain a director, it may be difficult to retain the post of chairman. In February 2024, the board had recommended Chandrasekaran's tenure for another 5 years. However later Noel Tata advocated an executive tenure of only 2 years.
