Railway Helpline 139: During train journeys, passengers often leave behind bags or valuables due to haste or negligence, or sometimes have them stolen. In such situations, passengers often become distressed and unsure of what steps to take.

However, Indian Railways offers several special protocols and digital services to ensure the safety of passengers and the security of their belongings. If you encounter such an incident during your journey, there is no need to panic. You can recover your belongings by following the simple methods outlined below.

**Do these 3 things immediately if your luggage is stolen on the train:**
Inform the TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner), coach attendant, or train guard about the incident immediately while the train is still in motion.
Ask the RPF (Railway Protection Force) or GRP (Government Railway Police) patrol team on board for an FIR form, fill it out, and hand it over to them.
If you have already disembarked at a station, visit the GRP police station at the nearest railway station to lodge a written complaint.

**Steps to take if you leave your luggage behind on the train:**
Immediately upon disembarking, go to the Station Master's cabin and report the incident. The Station Master can instantly send messages to upcoming stations to have your luggage safely removed from the train. Additionally, the Railway Protection Force uploads photos of lost or found luggage to the 'Mission Amanat' portal on the official websites of various Zonal Railways. You can visit the portal to view photos and details of the luggage and identify your belongings.

**Use these facilities to lodge a complaint:**
Immediately call the Indian Railways' all-in-one helpline number, 139, from your mobile phone. Once connected, provide the operator with your PNR number, train number, and full details regarding your coach and seat. Alternatively, you can lodge a complaint via the app. To do this, download the 'RailMadad' app from the Google Play Store or App Store. Open the app, navigate to the 'Grievance' section, enter your PNR, and file an online complaint regarding the lost or stolen luggage. Important points to remember when claiming luggage: Unclaimed or left-behind luggage found at the station is kept safe there for only 24 hours. Thereafter, it is transferred to the concerned railway's zonal or divisional office. When you go to the railway station or the GRP office to claim your luggage, ensure you carry a valid identity proof—such as an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, or driving license—along with your train ticket or a copy of the PNR.
