Manchester United’s efforts to bring in a left-back who could eventually take over from Luke Shaw have not gone entirely to plan.

The English defender started every Premier League match throughout the season, but given his poor injury history, INEOS are justified in planning ahead.

Somewhat surprisingly, Harry Amass has been judged not to be at the required level, with the Red Devils continuing to search the market for the right replacement.

Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall is viewed as the ideal signing, and although the England international is still keen on the move, the Magpies have no intention of parting with their left-back.

Because of that, INEOS have had to explore other options, both in the Premier League and elsewhere in Europe.

One player to have come into the frame is RB Leipzig’s David Raum, with the German full-back’s current contract due to expire next year.

The 28-year-old has a release clause worth about £34 million, but because of his contract situation, the 20-time English league champions believe an agreement could be reached for under £30 million.

Interestingly, a report from TEAMtalk has claimed that the Germany international has spoken with United before and is also willing to compete with Shaw for a place in the first team.

“One name already high on their list is RB Leipzig’s David Raum, with TEAMtalk having revealed earlier this year that the Germany international is admired by United.

“The 28-year-old is considered an attractive option given his contract situation. Raum has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal and, although he has a release clause of around £34million.

“Intermediaries believe a deal below £30million could potentially be negotiated if no new contract is put in place.

“We understand Raum has previously spoken with United. Crucially, we can confirm he would be happy with the prospect of moving to Old Trafford and competing with Luke Shaw for a place in the squad.”

INEOS generally prefer signing players who are already proven in the Premier League and also tend to favour those under the age of 26. Youri Tielemans is an exception, but his performances in England made that decision an obvious one.

Whether United move forward for David Raum will depend on how their pursuit of Hall develops. If Newcastle’s firm position does not soften, the German defender could become the preferred option because of his appealing price.

Incidentally, Christopher Vivell knows him well, while Benjamin Sesko had developed a strong understanding with the left-back during their time together in the Bundesliga. Those could be additional factors in his favour.
