The craze for electric vehicles (EV) in India is skyrocketing day by day. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Heavy Industries shared with everyone the latest progress report of the government schemes being run to promote electric vehicles in the country. According to these new data released by the ministry, a total of 67,657 electric vehicle chargers have been installed so far in various states and union territories across the country.

Network of charging stations spread across the country

According to government data, by August 7, 2026, a total of 67,657 EV chargers have been installed across the country. The funniest thing is that this amazing figure also includes 1,139 battery swapping station chargers. This amazing facility of battery swapping means that if the battery runs out during the journey, you will no longer have to wait for hours for charging, instead you will be able to exchange your discharged battery with another fully charged battery in the blink of an eye.

Huge tax cut and gift of green number plate

The government is continuously motivating people to switch from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles, and in this regard, the tax burden on the customers has been reduced to a great extent. The Ministry has informed that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on electric vehicles and their chargers or charging stations has now been reduced to only 5 percent.

Apart from this, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has also taken a huge and relief step. The ministry has announced the introduction of green number plates (green license plates) specifically for these battery vehicles. The biggest relief given with this historic decision is that these electric vehicles have been completely exempted from the requirements of any kind of commercial permit to run on the roads.

Lakhs of vehicles sold under FAME scheme

According to the data shared by the ministry, under the famous 'FAME' India scheme, there has been a huge jump in the sales of electric vehicles in the country. A total of 2.80 lakh electric vehicles were given financial support under the FAME-1 scheme. At the same time, till June 30, 2026, more than 16.72 lakh electric vehicles have been sold in the country under the Fame India Phase-2 scheme. These sold vehicles include the common people's favorite electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers.

Let us tell you that the second phase of Fame India Scheme was implemented for five years from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2024. The government had fixed a huge budget of Rs 11,500 crore for this entire ambitious scheme. Through this scheme, demand for electric vehicles was promoted and government subsidy was provided for setting up public EV charging stations (EV PCS) across the country.

Thousands of electric buses running on the roads

Not only private vehicles, but also the number of electric buses in public transport is increasing rapidly. According to the ministry report, by July 31, 2026, 5,299 electric buses have been put on the roads across the country under the FAME scheme. Additionally, a total of 27,555 electric buses have been covered under the scope of PM-eBus Service-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme till July 10, 2026.

Apart from this, the ministry has also presented data of many other government schemes. The sale of 26.59 lakh electric vehicles has received strong support under the new 'PM E-Drive' scheme. On the other hand, about 21.30 lakh electric vehicles have been sold till March 31, 2026 through the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme brought for the automobile sector. All these figures clearly show that on the basis of government policies and schemes, the future of electric vehicles in India is very bright and moving forward at a fast pace.
