What if a restaurant bill could become more valuable than the meal itself? That is the fascinating story shared by industrialist Harsh Goenka about Salvador Dali, the legendary Spanish surrealist artist known for his eccentric personality and bizarre, dreamlike paintings.

In a recent post on Goenka called it a “clever and charming story”. And it certainly sounds like something Dali would do.

The Trick Was Surprisingly Simple

According to the story, Dali would often host lavish meals for friends at expensive restaurants. The orders would pile up. So would the bill. But when it was time to pay, Dali had a rather unusual solution. He would write a check for the amount due and then turn it over. On the back, he would quickly sketch something in his distinctive style and sign it.
That small drawing changed everything.

The restaurant owner now had a choice. They could either cash the check and receive the money or keep the signed cheque, along with an original drawing by one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. Many reportedly chose the second option. And that is where Dali's cleverness came in.

The story works because the check was no longer simply a payment instrument. Once Dali had drawn on it and signed it, it became a collectible. The artist had essentially turned his reputation into currency, and his name did the rest.

Did Dali Actually Get Free Meals?

The anecdote has circulated for years, and versions of it differ.

The commonly told version says Dali would write checks for his restaurant bills and draw on the back, knowing that owners were unlikely to cash them. Another version says he sometimes wrote checks for only a small amount after extravagant dinners, adding artwork to make the check itself desirable. But one thing's for sure. Dali understood that his signature and artwork could be worth more to a restaurant than the money written on the cheque.
