Tottenham Hotspur are set to part ways with World Cup star Djed Spence in a surprise transfer move that has emerged unexpectedly.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is preparing to leave N17, with an agreement now in place for the full-back to join Inter Milan.

After an underwhelming season at Spurs, during which the club came close to relegation from the Premier League, Spence went on to impress at the World Cup in North America, establishing himself as one of England's stronger performers during their run to the semi-finals.

However, a report from Italian journalist Orazio Accomando of SportMediaSet says a deal has been agreed for about £30 million, with add-ons included.

In an update on X, formerly known as Twitter, Accomando said the move for Spence was at an “imminent closure” stage, with the defender lined up to replace Denzel Dumfries, who is heading to Real Madrid, at Italian champions Inter Milan.

The transfer appears to have developed from nowhere, with Inter having negotiated the fee down from an initial £35 million.

Spence enjoyed an encouraging summer with England and had been viewed as a player who might push on under Roberto De Zerbi.

The Kensington-born defender signed for Spurs in 2022 after helping Nottingham Forest win promotion to the Premier League while on loan from Middlesbrough, though he has not been a regular first-team presence for much of his spell in North London.

Loan moves to Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa followed after his arrival, with Spence only beginning to feature more consistently under Ange Postecoglou before earning the first of his 14 England caps in 2025.

The 26-year-old has operated both as a right wing-back and on the left for club and country in recent seasons, and this summer he follows England team-mate John Stones to San Siro as manager Cristian Chivu aims to retain the Scudetto.

The defender is reportedly set to sign a long-term contract running until 2031.

Spurs are going into the Premier League season with World Cup winner Pedro Porro as their starting right-back option, while Destiny Udogie is likely to be the first-choice left-back.

Cristian Romero also appears almost certain to leave the club in the coming days, with Inter themselves having competed with Atletico Madrid and Arsenal for the Argentine's signature.

According to Transfermarkt, Spence is valued at €40m. Tottenham begin their Premier League season against Brentford.
