Nashik Metro : To change the face of public transport in Nashik city Maha Metro has taken a very ambitious step. 14,520 crore as a long-term solution to the city’s rapid expansion, growing population and future traffic congestion. A new metro project has been proposed. Under this new comprehensive transport plan, 58 km long in the entire city of Nashik A grand metro network is planned. Interestingly, the earlier mooted tire-powered ‘Metro Neo’ scheme has now been scrapped altogether, instead of which it has been decided to launch a modern ‘Light Metro’ running on railway tracks.

Step 1 : Two important corridors

The entire project of 58 km will be implemented in two different phases. In the first phase of this, a network of about 35 km will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 8,770 crore. It consists of two main routes.. Nashik Metro

1st Route (Gangapur Village to Nashik Road): This 21.5 km long route will directly connect the east-west side of the city with the railway station. This route will be taken up on priority, that is 2031 The target has been set to be completed by Nashik Metro

Second Route (Mumbai Naka to Pathardi Phata): It is a 13.58 km corridor, which will strengthen intra-city connectivity. The route is targeted to be operational by 2036. Nashik Metro

According to Mahametro estimates, both these lines in the first phase will carry as many as 11,000 passengers per hour during peak hours. Nashik Metro

Phase 2 : Linkage of industrial belt and airport

The second phase of the project will focus on connecting Nashik’s industrial area and air traffic hub. Nashik Metro

Third Route (Ambad to Nashik Airport – Ozar) : This corridor will be 23 km long. This phase is expected to cost approximately Rs 5,750 crore 2046 There is a far-reaching plan to complete up to. Considering the increasing number of passengers at Nashik Airport, this route will be a major boost to the city’s economic development in the future. Nashik Metro

Reason for cancellation of ‘Metro Neo’

Earlier, the central government had announced a Rs 2092 crore ‘Metro Neo’ project for Nashik in the 2021-22 budget. However, as the concept backfired globally and on the advice of advisers to the Prime Minister’s Office, a more viable alternative for a city like Nashik was asked to be explored. Accordingly, Mahametro conducted a new mobility survey of the city. Considering the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela and the needs of the next 50 years, public representatives and experts insisted on a ‘light metro’ on full capacity railways, resulting in this revised 58 km plan. The project is not limited to the metro, but also includes development of 7 multi-modal transport hubs, 131 km of pedestrian infrastructure and 88 km of cycle tracks in the city. Currently Mahametro has sent the draft of this comprehensive plan to various stakeholders for suggestions and objections. An updated final proposal incorporating all these suggestions is due for approval in September 2026 It will be submitted to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
