London: British actress Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of The Office, has revealed that she has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her bones.
The 53-year-old actress shared the news in an Instagram post, saying she had been diagnosed around a year and a half ago. She said the cancer had metastasised to her spine, right hip and ribs and described it as incurable.
Actress urges people not to ignore changes
Davis said the first sign was not a conventional lump but a very small, hard area that she initially considered insignificant. Her experience prompted her to encourage people to get unusual changes checked rather than dismissing them.
She said she is trying to live whatever time remains as joyfully as possible and described the experience as having taught her important lessons.
Davis also said she remains willing and able to work, describing acting as one of the greatest joys in her life.
Fans and co-stars offer support
Davis received messages of support from fans and fellow actors following her announcement. Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly in the US version of The Office, praised Davis and highlighted the value of continuing to work while living with cancer.
Davis played Dawn, the receptionist and love interest of Tim Canterbury, portrayed by Martin Freeman, in the much-loved BBC comedy.
What is stage 4 breast cancer?
Stage 4 breast cancer means the cancer has spread from the breast to another part of the body. Although it is generally considered incurable, treatment can sometimes control the disease and help people live for years.
Common symptoms can include a breast or armpit lump or swelling, changes in breast size or shape, skin changes, nipple changes and unusual discharge. Anyone noticing a persistent or unusual change should seek medical advice.
