At present, women's safety remains a very big and serious issue before the society and the country. Every day, various kinds of debates are seen regarding crimes against women and restrictions on their freedom. Meanwhile, a strong and far-sighted message has come out from the justice system which shakes the thinking of the society. Delhi High Court has recently made a very important comment regarding the safety and freedom of women. The court has clearly said that society and families should teach boys to respect women instead of controlling the way girls dress and behave. This decision is being considered very important not only in the legal field but also from the social point of view. Court's historical commentary and social perspective: The Delhi High Court, while hearing a case, gave a strong message that crime and violence often have their roots in the old and narrow mindedness of the society which holds women responsible for everything. The court made it clear that the way a woman or girl dresses can never justify misbehavior. Nyaya Murthy emphasized that real change should start from homes. Unless we teach our sons how to respect the consent and dignity of women, it will not be possible to curb crimes in the society. Now, strong efforts are required at both legal and social levels to change this patriarchal mentality prevalent in the society. It is often seen in the society that whenever a criminal incident takes place, the first thing that is questioned is the victim's clothes, time of going out or her mannerisms. This decision of the court has dealt a severe blow to this type of blaming thinking. The Court has proved that the freedom and dignity of any individual is paramount. Women have every right to decide what they wear and how they live. It is the responsibility of the society to make every public place safe for women, and not to guard the freedom of women. This decision works to break all those stereotypical notions which try to view women as inferior. The biggest message of this decision is for the family and parents, there is a dire need for change in upbringing and values. The seeds of gender equality and mutual respect have to be sown in children during their upbringing. Along with moral education, gender sensitization lessons should also be taught in schools and colleges so that the young generation can give equal status to women. When boys learn from childhood that it is their duty to respect women, they will make an important contribution in building a safe and civilized society in the future. The law is doing its job, but real change will come only when there is a positive improvement in the social mindset.
