It is currently monsoon season, and many people are still using their air conditioners (ACs); while the rain has cooled the weather, it has also significantly increased humidity levels. To keep electricity bills down, many people frequently switch their ACs on and off.
Some believe that turning off the AC once the room cools down saves electricity and reduces strain on the machine; however, toggling the AC on and off every 10–15 minutes is not always the best approach.
In reality, frequently switching the AC on and off can disrupt its cooling balance. Restarting the machine after a short interval forces the compressor to restart its operation cycle. Over time, this places unnecessary strain on the AC's components and could even lead to a breakdown.
**Strain on the compressor**
The compressor is one of the most critical components of an AC unit. It plays a vital role in expelling heat from the room by circulating refrigerant. Repeatedly restarting the machine forces the compressor to go through the startup cycle again and again; this places excessive stress on the system and can increase repair costs if a malfunction occurs.
**...So, how can you save electricity?**
If you want to keep your electricity bill low while using the AC, focus on setting the right temperature instead of frequently switching it on and off. Maintain the temperature between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius. Keep doors and windows closed, block direct sunlight from entering the room, and clean the AC filters thoroughly at regular intervals. A dirty filter forces the AC to work harder than necessary.
