Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s Batwara 1947, also featuring Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol and others, is all set to release in theatres tomorrow (August 15), ahead of Independence Day 2026. Set during the Partition era, the Aamir Khan-backed film promises to be a heartfelt tale of love and courage. The story revolves around a man who chooses to courage over hatred and fights against all odds for humanity. Filmmaker Ramesh Taurani recently watched the film with the team and has now shared his first review online.

Ramesh Taurani praised  ,calling it a deeply sensitive, moving and humanity-glorifying film that deserves to be watched First Day, First Show.

He added, "It is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of compassion, especially during the darkest chapters of our history. @iamsunnydeol I delivers a terrific and deeply impactful performance. And what a joy it is to see @realpz doing what she does best on the big screen. @azmishabana18, @alifazal9 and @imkarandeol I are all exceptional in their respective roles, bringing such depth, intensity and authenticity to the film. @abhimanyusingh.44 is terrific as the villain, creating a character that is both compelling and deeply unsettling."

Taurani further lauded director Rajkumar Santoshi for creating a story that strikes an emotional chord and brings humanity, emotion and heart to the screen. He also congratulated producers Aparna Purohit and Aamir Khan for bankrolling an "incredible film."

The period drama centres on Sikander Mirza, portrayed by Sunny Deol, a Muslim man who relocates to Pakistan following the 1947 Partition. His family is allotted a sprawling haveli once owned by a Hindu household. However, Sikander soon learns that an elderly Hindu woman named Mai (played by Shabana Azmi), who still lives there and is unwilling to leave. Rather than evicting her, he chooses to shelter and safeguard her even as communal unrest and violence escalate around them.
