Aston Villa and PSG will face off in the UEFA Super Cup, with a high-profile referee of sorts set to oversee the contest.

The 2026 UEFA Super Cup will feature Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain against Europa League holders Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.

However, attention will not be limited to the starting XIs, as the official in charge is also set to draw focus, at least briefly.

Tonight’s referee is 34-year-old Somali official Omar Artan, and his appointment is both historic and unusual.

Artan is an international referee listed with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He joined FIFA’s international panel of match officials in 2018 and, in 2024, became the first Somali official to referee at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

One year later, he was named the CAF Men's Referee of the Year after his performances in continental competitions. More recently, Artan took charge of the second leg of the CAF Champions League Final.

Ordinarily, UEFA appointments for matches are made from Europe’s top refereeing pool.

Artan’s selection for PSG vs Aston Villa is therefore an exception, as it marks the first occasion on which a non-European referee will officiate the UEFA Super Cup.

UEFA confirmed that the appointment is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between UEFA and CAF. The partnership was created to 'foster exchange programs, referee development, and cross-continental cooperation'.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has described Artan as an official of 'exceptional quality', handing him the fixture as a sign of respect for African refereeing standards.

But Artan’s story extends beyond what he has achieved in Africa.

His appointment in Europe comes immediately after the major controversy in which he found himself involved ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

After FIFA selected him as one of the tournament’s lead match officials, Artan travelled to the United States in June. But when he arrived at Miami International Airport, US Customs and Border Protection refused him entry into the country and put him on a return flight.

US authorities pointed to strict travel bans and unspecified 'vetting concerns', prompting criticism from the international football community. FIFA said it regretted the situation but acknowledged it had no legal power to overrule US immigration enforcement.

After his exclusion from the World Cup, UEFA chose to award Artan this high-profile European fixture as a gesture of solidarity. He will also be backed by an all-African officiating team in Salzburg.
