Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Harbhajan Singh has given the reason for leaving the party and joining Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said that he was not being listened to in AAP and the purpose for which he had come into politics was not being fulfilled. According to Harbhajan, instead of doing politics, he had reached Rajya Sabha to raise issues to sports and to promote sports in the country.

In a podcast interview with news agency PTI, Harbhajan said that while he was in AAP, he gave many suggestions regarding sports but no work was done on them. For this reason he felt that there was no point in remaining in the party. Harbhajan was sent to Rajya Sabha by AAP in 2022. After this, in April 2026, he joined BJP along with six other party leaders.

What did Harbhajan Singh say on changing party?

Harbhajan Singh told that when Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had asked him to join AAP, he had made it clear that he wanted to work on sports issues and would stay away from politics. His aim was to promote sports in Punjab as well as across the country.

Harbhajan Singh said, 'I joined AAP only because the party was giving me an opportunity to work for the promotion of sports not only in Punjab but in the entire country. When I tried to present my ideas to the party, I was not listened to. My ideas remained just ideas.

Harbhajan raised questions after being called a traitor

After leaving AAP, there was a protest outside Harbhajan Singh's house in Jalandhar. The protesters burnt his effigy and called him a traitor. On this, Harbhajan said that people know him because of cricket and he has got a lot of love from the countrymen. He questioned whom he had betrayed. Harbhajan said that just because someone calls him a traitor, he does not become a traitor. He also said that his heart beats for India and Punjab and he does not need anyone's approval to prove his patriotism.
