Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court order directing the CBI and ED to investigate allegations that he has assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Rahul Gandhi's petition will be heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant on August 17.

The Congress MP has challenged the Allahabad High Court order which was issued in connection with the complaint of Karnataka BJP worker Vignesh Shishir. Shishir had accused Gandhi of having assets disproportionate to his income.

In its order issued in May, Allahabad High Court had said that if the concerned agencies have received the complaint, then the allegations made in it should be investigated as per law.

The court had also said that CBI and ED are free to take appropriate action under the legal framework.

During the hearing on July 20, the High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the affidavit filed by the CBI and said that the earlier instructions of the court were not properly followed in it.

The High Court also took note of the steps taken by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and said that if any actionable information is found during verification or investigation, the agency can proceed as per law.

Apart from CBI and ED, the Allahabad High Court bench also directed the Department of Personnel and Training, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Director of Serious Fraud Investigation Office to file replies on the allegations of the petitioner.

Apart from challenging the High Court's instructions, the matter will be heard on August 20.
