Noel Tata has strengthened his influence in the group by taking charge of Tata Trusts after playing a low-profile role for a long time. After Chandrasekaran's ouster from leadership, his role may be important in the selection of the next chairman of Tata Sons.

Noel Tata: Noel Tata's influence in the Tata Group has grown steadily over the years. His role as Chairman of Tata Trusts gives him an important position in the governance structure of Tata Sons and the entire group. After Mehli Mistry's departure and N Chandrasekaran's exit from the leadership, Noel Tata can now become the deciding voice in the selection of the next chairman.

Noel Tata's journey from Trent to Tata Trusts

Noel Tata's influence in Tata Group has not increased suddenly. He stayed away from the public limelight for a long time and worked in different companies of the group and made his mark as a quiet but effective businessman. His most prominent role was at Tata Group's retail company Trent, where he was instrumental in expanding brands like Westside and Zudio.

Noel Tata has always had a lower public profile than Ratan Tata. Despite this, his presence in the boardroom and his vision for the governance of the group companies continue to make him one of the important decision-makers of the Tata Group.

Noel Tata's name had come into discussion earlier also for the post of Chairman of Tata Sons. However, after Ratan Tata, first Cyrus Mistry and then N Chandrasekaran got this responsibility. Noel Tata gained a position of real influence when he took over the reins of Tata Trusts after the demise of Ratan Tata.

Tata Trusts' command increased influence

Tata Trusts hold about two-thirds stake in Tata Sons. In such a situation, the Chairman of Trusts has great importance in the governance and strategic decisions of Tata Group. From the very beginning, Noel Tata faced the challenge of balancing influential members with different views within the Trusts.

Differences with Mehli Mistry came to the fore during this period. Mistry was long considered close to Ratan Tata and had influence within the trusts. Differences came to light between the two parties regarding the reappointment of Vijay Singh as nominee director on the Tata Sons board.

Later, Noel Tata's position within the Trusts was further strengthened after Mehli Mistry was not re-appointed as trustee and he stepped down from the post. This development was seen as the first major organizational test of his leadership.

Noel's role important in succession after Chandrasekaran

Differences also emerged between Noel Tata and N Chandrasekaran over the leadership of Tata Sons. In a meeting of the Tata Sons board, Noel Tata raised questions about the losses incurred in some unlisted companies of the group and put forward several issues regarding the extension of Chandrasekaran's tenure.

This development shows that Noel Tata is no longer just the formal head of the Trusts, but is in a position to play an active role in the governance and leadership decisions of Tata Sons. He also added his son Neville Tata to the board of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, further strengthening the Tata family's trust-level presence.

Now with Chandrasekaran out of the leadership race, the selection of the next chairman of Tata Sons will be one of the most important succession decisions for the Tata Group. Given the stake of Tata Trusts in this process and the current situation of Noel Tata, his opinion is considered important.

Tata Group was founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868. Today it is a global conglomerate with business in more than 100 countries. Tata Sons is its major investment holding and promoter company, while Tata Trusts hold about 66 percent equity stake in Tata Sons. In such a situation, the role of Trusts and their leadership remains extremely important in the top level governance of the Group.
