New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that constitutional restrictions prevent him from seeking a third term in the White House in 2028, while stating that he would be willing to contest another election if legal provisions allowed it.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump addressed questions surrounding speculation about a possible 2028 presidential campaign. He said that while supporters have repeatedly encouraged him to run again, the law places clear limits on presidential terms.
Trump Cites Strict Constitutional Restrictions
Responding to questions about a potential third-term bid, Trump said that the law regarding presidential term limits is “very strict.” He noted that many supporters have raised the possibility of a 2028 campaign, including during recent public events where crowds reportedly chanted “2028.”
Trump, however, clarified that existing constitutional provisions prevent a president from being elected more than twice.
His remarks were not an announcement of a future presidential campaign but rather an acknowledgment of the legal restrictions surrounding presidential term limits.
22nd Amendment Sets Presidential Term Limits
The restriction on a US president serving more than two elected terms comes from the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution.
The amendment states that “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” It was approved by Congress in 1947 and ratified by the states in February 1951, formally establishing a two-term limit for the presidency.
The constitutional provision has remained a key safeguard in the US political system, preventing any president from seeking unlimited electoral terms.
Trump's comments have renewed discussions around presidential term limits, constitutional provisions, and the political landscape ahead of the 2028 US election.
