Liverpool are exploring a move for a superstar youngster, with discussions over a transfer now under way.

Liverpool are keen to land one of the most exciting wonderkids in world football.

The Reds spent well over £400 million last summer as they aimed to protect their Premier League title with proven, established talent. But new manager Andoni Iraola has been open to lower-profile additions this summer, as the club move on from Arne Slot, as well as veterans Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah.

Victor Munoz has already arrived to strengthen the attack, while Jeremy Jacquet is regarded as a highly rated defender, though further signings could still follow before the transfer window shuts.

Bradley Barcola has been heavily linked with the Reds as the club seek to add more firepower and bring in an A-list talent this month.

However, one player who certainly will not be joining before the deadline — but could still agree terms at Anfield — is Mexican teenage star Gilberto Mora.

The teenager was described this summer by FourFourTwo youth football expert Joe Donnohue, in a report during the World Cup, as “Diminutive and flighty, always ready to take a shot on and never afraid to get stuck in”.

At 17 years and 240 days old, the Tijuana playmaker was the youngest player at the tournament, and he has repeatedly been linked with a switch from Mexico to Merseyside, with one report suggesting in July that Liverpool were intensifying their interest.

Now, Wednesday’s print edition of 24 Horas in Mexico reports, via Sport Witness, that Iraola’s side are looking at bringing the youngster in this winter once he turns 18. The report also notes that Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona are all pursuing him too, while FourFourTwo understands that Arsenal and Manchester City have also been monitoring him.

Sport Witness adds that, “Still there is still no statement of an agreement or formal offer,” although Liverpool appear to have a clearer plan for how any deal would work, with the Mexican sensation likely to require an adaptation period if he makes the move to Europe.

Andres Lillini, who oversees Mexico’s youth national teams, has been credited with saying: “After playing a World Cup, with everything he went through physically and emotionally, we have to look after the person and not wear him down just because we want to win something” — and that is almost certain to be the approach taken by the Premier League giants.

Liverpool already possess significant talent in forward positions — particularly on the left-hand side, where Mora can be effective — with another teenager, Rio Ngumoha, viewed as the long-term successor in that role.

If the Reds do complete a deal for Mora in January, it remains highly likely they will focus on integrating him culturally and physically, while also giving him minutes to adjust to English football, with the possibility of a summer loan move elsewhere to continue his development away from the spotlight.

According to Transfermarkt, the 17-year-old is valued at €25 million. Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United next weekend.
