Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to those who suffered during the Partition of India, saying Partition Horrors Remembrance Day should strengthen the country's resolve to preserve harmony and brotherhood.

“Today we mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. We recall the courage of all those who were impacted by Partition,” the Prime Minister said.

He also highlighted the resilience of survivors who rebuilt their lives despite losing their homes and livelihoods, saying many transformed adversity into achievement and contributed significantly to India's progress.

“Their life journeys remind us of the strength of the human spirit,” Modi said, adding that the day should deepen the resolve to preserve harmony and brotherhood and collectively work towards building a “Viksit Bharat”.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to those who lost their lives and suffered during Partition, describing August 14, 1947, as one of the most brutal chapters in history.

Shah said millions endured inhuman suffering, while tens of millions were forced to abandon their homes, property and loved ones and become displaced.

He said the Partition remained a painful scar that should not be forgotten and paid homage to those who lost their lives and those who endured atrocities.

Shah also said Partition Horrors Remembrance Day was intended to ensure that younger generations remain aware of the tragedy so that divisive forces cannot succeed again.

He said the goal should be “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” (One India, Excellent India).

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also remembered those who died during Partition, saying the event represented far more than the division of geographical boundaries.

In a post on X, Adityanath said Partition shattered the dreams, relationships and emotions of countless families.

He said the observance should encourage people to remember the suffering, learn from the experience and place the unity and integrity of the nation above all else.

Adityanath paid tribute to the innocent people who lost their lives and said their memories should continue to inspire efforts to build a strong, united and indivisible India.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is observed on August 14 to remember the suffering, displacement and loss of life associated with the Partition of India in 1947.

Partition triggered one of the largest movements of people in modern history, with millions crossing newly created borders amid widespread communal violence and uprising.
