Pakistan is celebrating its Independence Day today, Pakistan was formed on 14 August 1947 and since then till today, this country emerging from India has been eyeing India and every time India has given a befitting reply to Pakistan and stopped it from speaking even at the international level, but Pakistan does not desist from its nefarious activities and making statements about India. Now on the day of Independence, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has once again given a strong message to India regarding the water of Indus River.
In his address on the eve of Independence Day, Sharif said that every drop of water in Pakistan’s share is a red line for it. This statement of Sharif has come at a time when there is continuous tension in India-Pakistan relations regarding the Indus Water Treaty.
What is Shehbaz Sharif’s gibberish?
Speaking at an event in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif issued a direct warning to India, linking Indus river water to Pakistan’s national security and sovereignty. He said, “Every drop of water is a red line for us and if India does not come on the right path, we will give a direct reply to it.” Sharif also said that Pakistan does not want war and wants peace in the region, but its peace policy should not be seen as weakness.
Why has the Indus Water Treaty become a big controversy?
The Indus Water Treaty has long been the basis of water sharing between India and Pakistan. However, amid the increasing tension between the two countries, this agreement has now become the center of a major strategic dispute. India had decided to suspend the Indus Water Treaty after the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025.
26 people were killed in this attack and India held Pakistan-backed terrorists responsible for it. Pakistan had denied these allegations. After this, India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan and once again brought Pakistan to its knees. After this India had postponed the Indus Water Treaty.
Why is Pakistan worried?
Pakistan has been continuously opposing India’s steps regarding the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan says that any step affecting its share of water in the Indus river system will be a serious matter for it. Pakistan has been saying earlier also that water is its lifeline and any attempt to stop or divert its flow will be responded to.
Why does concern increase with every drop of water?
The Indus River system is extremely important for Pakistan’s agriculture and economy. For this reason, the Government of Pakistan has been presenting the issue of water by linking it to national interest and security. On the other hand, water resources, security and treaty provisions to the Indus River system are also important for India. In such a situation, amidst the strict statements of both the countries, the water issue may become more diplomatically sensitive in the coming days.
