Assassination of Sri Lankan coach

62-year-old coach Sumit Fernando has passed away after an altercation on the cricket field. A 17-year-old school cricketer has been arrested by the police in this case. According to police, on August 8, two players had an argument over drinking water, which later turned into a brawl. Meanwhile, Sumit Fernando got injured and was admitted to the hospital. He died on Tuesday during treatment. The 17-year-old player, who was arrested in this case, was produced in a Colombo court on Tuesday. The court ordered him to be kept in the custody of the juvenile detention center till August 17.

Controversy over drinking water

The incident took place at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club in Colombo. On August 8, two players got into an argument over drinking water. According to the police, the players went to the tap to drink water, but there was no water coming from the tap. After that, the situation between the coach and the players got heated and they got into an argument. Meanwhile, the two players got into a fight, during which the 17-year-old allegedly assaulted the coach, Fernando. Fernando was then rushed to a hospital in Colombo, where he breathed his last. The exact cause of his death has not been revealed, but investigations have revealed that coach Fernando had been suffering from heart problems for a long time.

Sumit Fernando was a former cricket coach at Prince of Wales College in Moratuwa. He coached current Sri Lanka ODI captain Kusal Mendis during his school days. He also coached many other talented cricketers at the school level. Later Fernando worked as Curator of Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club. Sumit Fernando was cremated on Thursday. The police are investigating the incident and interrogating the players involved.
