UP assembly elections were held every two years after 1989. In 1991, a year before the demolition of Babri Masjid, Netram Singh won from Bharatiya Janata Party and BJP formed the government. In the year 1996 also, Netram won and BJP formed the government in the state in alliance with BSP.
In the year 2002, Manpal Singh of Samajwadi Party won from Kasganj, but the alliance of BJP and BSP was successful in forming the government. But the matter went wrong when Mulayam Singh Yadav formed the government after the MLAs of Mayawati’s party left the party.
