New Delhi:Comedian Samay Raina has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The court has canceled all the FIRs registered against him and four others in the case of alleged insensitive comments regarding disabled people. This matter was to his show 'India's Got Latent'. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice JV Mohana heard the case on Friday. Earlier, the Supreme Court had strongly reprimanded Raina for the alleged objectionable comments made in the show.
The court found that Samay Raina and other accused had followed the instructions given earlier. After this, the process of quashing the criminal cases registered against him was completed. The court had directed him to organize awareness programs for disabled persons and raise funds in their interest.
Court appreciated the efforts
In the last hearing, the court had also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on Raina and four others. The court had said that the situation had become serious due to non-fulfillment of promises to compensation and reforms. On Friday, the bench appreciated the efforts made in organizing exhibitions for disabled people and in their welfare. The court said that if genuine efforts are made then good results definitely emerge. The bench also said that these youth are talented and working in a positive direction can yield better results.
In which case was the complaint made?
Cure SMA India Foundation had filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that the show allegedly made insensitive comments on the cost associated with the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy. Besides, there was also an allegation of making fun of the person affected by this disease. Apart from Samay Raina, names of Vipun Goyal, Balraj Paramjit Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar were also included in the petition. The controversial episode of the show was recorded in November.
However, a separate case involving YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia against Samay Raina and some others is yet to be heard. This case pertains to alleged objectionable remarks made about the parents of a contestant in the show.
