Samay Raina FIR case

The Supreme Court on Friday canceled all the FIRs registered against comedian Samay Raina and four others. The cases were to alleged objectionable comments he made about persons with disabilities in his show 'India's Got Latent'.

The decision was taken by a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, which also included Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana. The court said that the accused, following the instructions given earlier, organized awareness programs for persons with disabilities and collected assistance funds.

Along with Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjit Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar alias Sonali Aditya Desai and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar have also got relief in this case. The court ended the criminal proceedings against all of them and also quashed other proceedings.

The Supreme Court appreciated the efforts made by Samay Raina and other accused for the cause of persons with disabilities. The bench said that when efforts are sincere, they are likely to yield positive results.

The court also said that these youth are talented and if they channelize their energy in a positive direction, it can have a good impact.

Hearing continues on big issue

However, the Supreme Court has not completely concluded this matter. The court will now consider how better monitoring and caution can be ensured on sensitive topics to persons with disabilities in online and entertainment content.

For this, suggestions will also be taken from disabled people. The Court may issue further necessary directions on this broad issue.

The controversial episode of 'India's Got Latent' was recorded on 14 November 2024 and later aired. Some cast members and guests associated with the show were accused of making obscene and allegedly insensitive comments, following which several criminal cases were filed against them.
