If the activity during the summer transfer window is any indication, the 2026/27 Premier League season is shaping up to be a gripping contest.

Clubs across the top flight have spent heavily in their chase for success, and there is still ample time left in the window for more deals to be completed.

Defending champions Arsenal will begin the campaign as favourites to retain the crown, although repeating the achievement may not be straightforward.

Here is a look at the standout summer transfers so far, followed by a preview of the upcoming Premier League season.

Three of the so-called ‘Big Six’ clubs have brought in new managers this summer, adding an intriguing subplot to what could turn out to be a truly unforgettable Premier League campaign.

There is a strong case for saying Arsenal’s settled situation under Mikel Arteta gives them an edge in the title race.

Each of their main challengers has changed manager since the start of the year, creating an uncertain picture around those clubs.

That also sets the stage perfectly for fresh managerial rivalries to emerge this season and in the years ahead in the Premier League.

Arteta had enjoyed a positive relationship with former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola because of their previous time working together.

Enzo Maresca’s arrival at City changes that equation, especially as he is known for being a comparatively combustible personality.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi also has a reputation for being fiery, adding another layer of intrigue to the campaign.

Arsenal’s position as title favourites is fully justified after they finally ended their 22-year wait to finish on top last season.

However, an injury to Willian Saliba could become a major issue. Since Saliba made his debut in 2022, Arsenal have won 68.7 percent of their Premier League matches when he has featured in the side.

When he has been unavailable, their win rate falls to 47.6%. With the French defender expected to be out for several months, Arsenal’s title rivals may be able to take advantage.

City will believe they can knock Arsenal off their perch, but Guardiola’s choice to step aside makes them a risky proposition.

Maresca may turn out to be an astute appointment, but there is no certainty that he can carry forward the platform Guardiola built.

City have spent big to bring in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, but he appears hugely overpriced when compared with what other clubs have paid for midfielders this summer.

If City were to lose Rodri this summer, their chances of overhauling Arsenal in the title race would weaken even more.

With question marks surrounding last season’s top two, Manchester United could represent the value option to win the title for the first time since 2012/13.

Michael Carrick has done an outstanding job since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, and the Red Devils should be capable of sustaining a serious title challenge this season.

Youri Tielemans looks a smart signing from Aston Villa, while Andrey Santos could develop into an elite midfielder after his move from Chelsea.

The Brazilian’s former club may also be in the hunt under new manager Xabi Alonso. The Blues have completed several excellent signings this summer.

Among them is Morgan Rogers, who has arrived at Stamford Bridge after establishing himself as one of the country’s leading players during his spell with Villa.

Liverpool and Tottenham will also expect to be involved, although they may find it difficult to match the pace of the rest of the ‘Big Six’ clubs.

The Reds still appear to have several gaps in their squad, while Tottenham’s extravagant spending has not solved every issue.

Villa ended last season in the top four and should be targeting European qualification once again, as long as Rogers’ departure does not affect them too much.

Newcastle may be heading for another underwhelming campaign, while Leeds United are being backed to push on after avoiding relegation last season.

At the bottom end of the table, Hull City and Ipswich Town appear likely to struggle after earning promotion from the Championship last season.

Fellow newcomers Coventry City are also expected to be in the relegation fight, but they may have enough to survive under manager Frank Lampard.
