The Supreme Court has given a big relief in the case of insensitive and objectionable comments made by comedian Samay Raina and podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia against the disabled in the show ‘India’s Got Latent’. The Supreme Court has canceled the FIRs registered against both of them in different states in connection with this dispute.
Court canceled all FIRs
On Friday, the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice JV Mohana took note of Raina and others following the directions of the Supreme Court and canceled all the cases against them. During the last hearing, the court had imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on Raina and four others, observing that they had cheated the court by not complying with the undertaking given to make reforms. However, the court on Friday praised the efforts of Raina and others in organizing the show for the benefit of disabled people.
What did the bench say?
The bench said, ‘When genuine efforts are made, good results will definitely be achieved. They are very smart young people. If they have started working in a good direction, they will get good results. The court canceled the criminal cases registered against him for making insensitive remarks against disabled people.
What was the allegation?
Cure SMA India Foundation had filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging that Raina made rude remarks about the high cost of treating spinal muscular atrophy and also made fun of a person with such a disability.
In this appeal, jokes by Raina, who hosted India’s Got Latent, and other social media influencers Vipun Goyal, Balraj Paramjit Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar were flagged.
Let us tell you that this controversial episode was recorded in November. Many cases were filed against Samay Raina and other comics accusing them of obscene and insensitive things.
