New Delhi. Bar Council of India (BCI) President and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra has again given clarification regarding one of his orders. Along with this, he has also responded to the allegations of 'Cockroach Janata Party' (CJP) founder Abhijeet Deepke and Sourav Das. He said that like Deepke and Das, he also pays attention to the interests of the students. BCI had banned the enrollment as advocates of all the students of the 2026 batch of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. The order said that a group of students had protested against making Chief Justice of India Surya Kant the chief guest at the convocation ceremony of the university. CJP had strongly opposed it. Now this order has been returned within a few hours.

CJP made a scathing attack

Launching a scathing attack on Bar Council of India (BCI) President and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra on Friday, CJP spokesperson Sourav Das has raised questions on the expenses of BCI. Along with this, demanded accountability on Mishra's long tenure. CJP described this development as a victory for the youth. Spokesperson Saurav Das wrote that it is done brother. Another big victory for the youth! But the fight for accountability will continue.

Citing BCI's official audited data, he said around Rs 14.22 crore was spent on activities and meetings in the financial year 2024-25. Das questioned that Mishra has been in the post since 2012 and what was done for the welfare of young lawyers and law schools. He demanded Mishra's resignation and said that now his time is over.

What is the controversy after all?

The controversy began on Thursday (August 13) when the BCI directed state bar councils not to enroll any student of the 2026 batch of NALSAR as advocates. The basis of the order was the protest by some students against making Chief Justice Surya Kant the chief guest at the convocation ceremony of the university. Mishra's order said that students who do not respect the highest judicial post of the country cannot become responsible advocates. A report and names of the students involved were also sought from the university within three days.

Within hours of the order being issued, BCI had to back down after widespread protests and criticism on social media. The first partial amendment was made that most of the students are innocent and will be allowed to enroll while the investigation continues. Late last night, Mishra posted on X and announced that all proceedings against the 2026 batch have been closed. He said that after feedback from senior advocates, bar members, law students and citizens, BCI has come to the conclusion that the students had no role in any disturbance or agitation. Mishra advised students to express their opinions freely, but with respect and institutional decorum.
