India topped the medal tally at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2026 in Lagos, Nigeria. India finished the four-day campaign with a total of 35 medals – 13 Gold, 8 Silver and 14 Bronze – across the U-23 and Senior competitions.
The campaign concluded on Wednesday, Day 4, with a strong performance in the Senior Team competitions. Indian fencers won 5 Gold medals out of the 6 team events contested. India secured gold in Men’s Sabre, Women’s Sabre, Men’s Épée, Women’s Épée and Women’s Foil, while the Men’s Foil team won Silver.
The performance helped India finish at the top of the overall standings and earn the prestigious Wilkinson Sword Trophy, which has been awarded since 1982 by the Commonwealth Fencing Federation to the nation with the best overall results. India began its campaign on Day 1 with a 17-medal haul in the U-23 Individual events, including 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 9 Bronze medals.
The day saw a complete podium sweep in Men’s Sabre, led by Gold medallist Nikhil Wagh. Joys Ashita won Gold in Women’s Foil, Prachi Lohan claimed Gold in Women’s Épée, while Jeferlin won Gold in Women’s Sabre. On Day 2, Team India moved into the Senior Individual competitions and added 7 more medals – 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze.
The day was headlined by a Gold-Silver finish in Senior Women’s Épée, with Tanishka Khatri winning Gold and Khushi Dabhade taking Silver. India added another 5 medals on Day 3, including 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.
Kanaglakshmi won Gold in Senior Women’s Foil, Rajendran Shanthimol Sherjin secured Gold in Senior Men’s Épée, while Singh Karan Singh won Gold in Senior Men’s Sabre.
Expressing pride in the achievement, Shri Rajeev Mehta, Secretary General of the Fencing Association of India, said: “I am incredibly proud of our entire contingent-every single athlete, coach, and support staff member whose untiring dedication made this historic victory possible. Lifting the Commonwealth Overall Championship title for the very first time is a testament to the talent, discipline, and hard work within Indian fencing. This monumental achievement will serve as a massive boost of confidence for our fencers and will undoubtedly create strong positive momentum as we prepare for upcoming international tournaments and major global championships.”
