The Lok Sabha Secretariat has sought a response from Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi by August 28 regarding his remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The reply has been sought in connection with a notice of breach of privilege and contempt of the House over remarks made against Shah during the debate on the ‘Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026’ in the House.

Notice to Rahul for commenting on Shah

In a letter dated August 14, joint secretary H Ram Prakash said the notice was given by BJP MPs Anurag Singh Thakur and Sanjay Jaiswal.
Thakur, in a notice sent on July 30, alleged that Rahul Gandhi used unparliamentary and insulting language and made serious allegations against the Home Minister during the debate without prior notice under Rule 353. While on 29 July, Sanjay Jaiswal in a separate letter sought notice of Gandhi’s use of unparliamentary language and appropriate action under the rules of procedure.
In a notice sent to Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that he should send his reply or comments on the matter by August 28 for the consideration of the Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

BJP MPs complained

Jaiswal in his notice said, ‘Severe criticism of government policy is a legitimate and necessary feature of parliamentary democracy, but personal attacks and use of insulting, defamatory or unparliamentary language cannot be allowed during the proceedings of the House.’ He urged that if any expression is found to be unparliamentary, offensive or in violation of the rules and conventions of the House, it should be excluded from proceedings under Rule 380.
Jaiswal also demanded that the Speaker should admonish Rahul Gandhi to maintain the dignity, restraint and decorum expected of an MP.
