Nepal – There is a two-way trade in electricity between Nepal and India. In winter, when Nepal has water shortages and hydropower production declines, India sells electricity to Nepal. Similarly, when production increases during the monsoon, Nepal sells electricity back to India.

Bhutan – India sells power to Bhutan to meet winter power shortages, while importing hydropower from Bhutan on other days. Due to the high flow of rivers in Bhutan, hydropower generation is huge between May and November. During this period, Bhutan earns revenue by selling surplus electricity to India.

Myanmar – India also sells a limited amount of electricity to Myanmar through cross-border grid connectivity.

High-level review meetings are underway between India and Sri Lanka to lay undersea transmission lines and expand power trade. Both the countries are also reviewing the entire solar power project to promote energy security and renewable energy.
