Uttar Pradesh. A statement has increased the political stir in the politics of Uttar Pradesh before the 2027 assembly elections. Samajwadi Party's national general secretary Shivpal Yadav has said that if the Samajwadi Party government is formed in Uttar Pradesh in 2027, then jailed senior party leader and former minister Azam Khan will be made the Home Minister.

Shivpal Yadav met Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam in Rampur district jail on Wednesday. After this meeting which lasted for about an hour, while addressing the party workers and supporters, he raised the issue of alleged injustice towards Azam Khan. Shivpal Yadav alleged that Azam Khan is facing difficult conditions in jail. They claimed that they were being forced to sleep on the floor and adequate arrangements for medicines and clothes were also not being made. However, these claims are of Shivpal Yadav. After the meeting, Shivpal Yadav said that if Samajwadi Party comes to power in 2027, action will be taken against those responsible for the alleged injustice done to Azam Khan. He said that the main goal of the party is to form the government in 2027. According to him, Azam Khan has also sent a message to the party leaders from jail. He has appealed to the SP leaders to tour the entire Uttar Pradesh and strengthen the party among the people. Besides, Akhilesh Yadav has also been asked to tour the entire state.

There has also been a reaction from BJP on this statement. BJP leader Dinesh Pratap Singh targeted Shivpal Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav and said that both are daydreaming. He said that Azam Khan will first have to face the ongoing cases and legal battles against him, only then can he think about any political post. Azam Khan is in jail after being convicted in several cases. In May 2026, an MP-MLA court had increased his sentence from seven years to 10 years in a case to two PAN cards with different dates of birth. The court had also increased the amount of fine to Rs 5 lakh. Now this announcement of Shivpal Yadav has started a new debate in the politics of UP. The question is whether Azam Khan will really be given the responsibility of Home Minister if the SP government is formed in 2027, or is this statement part of the election strategy? At present it is clear that the issue of Azam Khan has once again come to the center of the politics of Uttar Pradesh.
