  • Can't take risks in Test series

IND vs SL: The Indian team is currently touring Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series as part of the ongoing World Test Championship. The Indian team will play the first match of this Test series on August 15 at the Galle Stadium. The captain in a press conference held a day before the match By Shubman Gill Answered questions about the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudarshan. Both these players were in the squad for the Test series, but were forced to withdraw due to lack of fitness in time. Skipper Gill said that the team management is constantly monitoring the fitness of both the players who are recovering from injuries at BCCI's Center of Excellence.

We know their condition…

Responding to questions about the fitness of Sai Sudarshan and Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill said, 'Yes, we are in touch with both the players. His fitness is being constantly monitored and we know his current condition. Sai's omission from the team was disappointing, as initially we thought he would be in the series, but despite regular check-ups, his condition did not improve as quickly as we had hoped. Keeping in mind the five-day Test match, we decided to drop both the players. Had it been an ODI or a T20 match, it would have been a different story. But in a test match you don't want to take any risk. I believe that in a Test match, you get more opportunities to bounce back with other players. If a player does not perform well on the first day, he gets more chances to return to the team. So, considering this, it was disappointing to drop Sai and Bumrah from the team.'

Having time to prepare is a big plus

The Indian team played a three-day match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI before the start of the Test series, giving them a good chance to prepare and acclimatise. Team India captain Shubman Gill said that preparation is better if there is at least a week or 10 days in the schedule before the Test match. Last year also we had a very busy schedule, so it was not easy to adapt to that tight schedule. Many of our players do not have much international experience yet, so having the extra time to prepare is very beneficial.
