RBI Penalty: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is currently in action mode. Several banks have faced regulatory scrutiny recently, and IndusInd Bank has now been added to this list.
RBI News: One can gauge just how strict the RBI is regarding its regulations by observing its recent actions. The RBI has recently imposed penalties on four financial institutions, including IndusInd Bank, for non-compliance with regulations. Among them, the most significant lapses were found in IndusInd Bank's operations, resulting in the highest penalty being levied against it.
How much was the fine imposed on the bank?
The RBI has imposed a penalty of ₹59.20 lakh on IndusInd Bank. The bank was charged with violating RBI norms related to interest rates on deposits and securitization. Investigations revealed that the bank paid interest on funds held in certain current accounts, whereas the rules governing interest payments on such accounts are different. Additionally, the bank engaged in activities such as 'synthetic securitization' that were not in accordance with RBI regulations.
Action taken against these four entities as well.
Apart from IndusInd Bank, the RBI has also taken action against three other financial institutions. Fusion Finance was fined ₹2.7 lakh for failing to comply with KYC norms, while Northern Arc Capital was fined ₹6.2 lakh for not providing accurate information regarding customer complaints and for negligence concerning internal ombudsman regulations. Meanwhile, Muthoot MCred was fined ₹3.1 lakh for classifying certain NPA (Non-Performing Asset) accounts as 'standard' without the recovery of outstanding interest and principal.
What will be the impact on customers?
The RBI has clarified that these penalties relate to regulatory violations and do not imply that any fraud has occurred involving the customers of these institutions. Therefore, if someone holds an account with IndusInd Bank or is associated with the bank in any other capacity, there will be no impact on their account or banking services. Apart from this, there will be no significant impact on customers associated with other institutions.
It is worth noting that the review of IndusInd Bank, Northern Arc Capital, and Fusion Finance was conducted as of March 31, 2025, and this action has been taken based on their financial position.
