Wolverhampton Wanderers hosted Blackburn Rovers in their first Championship match since the conclusion of the 2017/18 season.

The recently relegated home side started as favourites and went in front in the 18th minute, when Fer López carved open the Rovers backline before Marshall Munetsi calmly finished past Balázs Tóth.

Blackburn responded well and drew level in the 27th minute. Ryoya Morishita delivered a cross from the right and Sean McLoughlin rose to head it in.

The visitors then completed the comeback soon after the interval. Once again the move came down the right, with Dapo Afolayan supplying the cross this time for Andri Gudjohnsen to convert from close range.

From then on, Wolves pressed for an equaliser and introduced Raúl Jiménez on the hour mark after his three-season spell away from the club.

With time running out, the hosts were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after Ryan Alebiosu was ruled to have had his hand inside the area when the ball struck it. Fittingly, Jiménez stepped up to take the spot-kick, sending Tóth the wrong way and sealing a 2-2 draw in an entertaining opening match of the new Championship season.
