Manchester United are widely known to be in the market for a left-back this summer, but the latest reports suggest INEOS chose not to pursue the chance to sign England international full-back Djed Spence.
Luke Shaw’s recurring fitness issues have caused concern among the club’s co-owners, and the Red Devils have been linked with a move for Lewis Hall.
Newcastle United have made negotiations difficult for United, which has forced the 20-time English league champions to look at other options.
Djed Spence was one such option and, according to TEAMtalk, the Tottenham Hotspur defender was offered to United, who were put off by Spurs’ valuation.
The North London club wanted £45 million after the 26-year-old’s impressive World Cup performances, and other Premier League clubs were also given the same opportunity.
“A host of Premier League clubs were offered the chance to sign the 26-year-old, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Everton.
“There was interest, but Tottenham’s initial asking price of around £45million was viewed as too high and no deal materialised.”
Sky Sports has now reported that the full-back, who is capable of playing on either side, is closing in on a transfer to Inter Milan.
The Serie A club is set to pay £30 million, underlining once again how clubs continue to demand a premium when dealing with the Old Trafford side.
“Inter Milan have agreed a £30m deal to sign England defender Djed Spence from Tottenham. Sky Sports News understands the agreement includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause.”
It remains to be seen who United eventually move for, especially with academy talent Harry Amass also expected to leave.
The chance to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal was also rejected, and that suggests United still believe Lewis Hall can be signed.
INEOS have also identified lower-cost alternatives such as David Raum, Jorge Salinas and Joaquin Seys in case Newcastle United do not soften their position.
