In his address, PM Modi linked the increasing competition of coaching institutes to the economic pressure on poor and middle class families and said that the government wants that the youth should not have to spend huge amounts of money to prepare for competitive examinations.

1. Prime Minister Modi said, “The ongoing competition for coaching classes has become a big burden for middle-class families. Every parent feels that if they do not send their child to a coaching centre, then they are somehow lagging behind or are not from a respectable family.” He said that the government wants to help the youth and their families save thousands of crores of rupees spent on coaching.

2. In his address, the Prime Minister also asked the youth to move forward by staying close to their families. He said, “Therefore, we have decided to provide free online coaching for various competitive examinations to our youth.” The aim of this initiative is said to be to make preparation for competitive examinations more accessible and to reduce the dependence of students on expensive coaching institutes.

3. PM Modi said that India has digital public infrastructure and the country also has high level talented teachers and educationists. “We have digital public infrastructure and we have highly talented teachers and academics,” he said.

The announcement of free online coaching has come at a time when there have been protests by youth and students in many parts of the country over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. The demand for transparency and fairness in the examination process was prominent in these demonstrations. Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has also been one of the major centers of such demonstrations. In such an environment, the government’s announcement of providing financial relief for preparation of competitive examinations is also being seen as an attempt to reach out to the youth.
