7.7 magnitude earthquake wreaks havoc in Indonesia, at least 5 people killed on Flores island

A powerful earthquake that occurred off the coast of Flores island of Indonesia on Saturday morning caused massive devastation. At least 5 people died in this earthquake of 7.7 magnitude. Local authorities have confirmed the deaths, CNN reports.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred about 68 kilometers north of the city of Ende in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province. After this many aftershocks were also felt.

USGS said that about 5 lakh people were exposed to strong or severe tremors of this earthquake. The earthquake caused damage to buildings and many people ran out of their homes out of fear.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said a tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, which was later lifted. According to the agency, about 2,000 people in the Ngekeo area were evacuated as a precaution.

According to preliminary information from BNPB, about 15 buildings, including private houses and government offices, have been damaged.

Earlier on Saturday, an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude was recorded in Indonesia. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), this earthquake occurred at a depth of 49 kilometers. After this, two more earthquakes of magnitude 6.3 and 6.0 were recorded in the Flores Sea area.
