August 15 started carrying a different meaning for Indian cricket fans since 2020, when MS Dhoni, one of the best cricketers and Suresh Raina, a class all-rounder announced their retirement from international cricket.
Dhoni, who led the Indian side to multiple glories, dropped an Instagram post, calling it quits on his international career. Soon after, Suresh Raina, a talismanic batter and a splendid fielder followed his skipper and joined him on the journey, announcing retirement from international cricket.
Dhoni retired as the only captain to lift all three ICC trophies, including the ODI World Cup, the T20 World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. Not only this, but he also took the side to the top of the ICC Test rankings. His final India appearance came in July 2019 during the World Cup 2019 semifinal against New Zealand, which also happened to be his 350th ODI. During the game, Dhoni made 50 off 72 balls before being sent back off a rocket throw from Martin Guptill by inches as India exited the tournament.
On the other hand, Suresh Raina became the first Indian to score a T20I century and the first from the country to have a ton in all three formats. While his Test career was short-lived and start-stop, he played 226 ODIs and 78 T20Is for India. Raina scored 768 Test runs, and 5615, 1605 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively. He also scalped 36 ODI wickets, and 13 each in the other two formats. He last represented India in the ODIs and T20Is during the 2018 England tour.
