Lucknow. The state government has taken a major decision to improve the quality of mid-day meal served to children in council schools of Uttar Pradesh. Now, to ensure the purity and nutritional value of the food served in schools, regular lab testing will be done. Under this, food samples will be collected suddenly from government schools of all the development blocks of the state. This strict step has been taken recently after continuous complaints and videos went viral from various districts regarding poor quality of food, lack of hygiene and violation of prescribed menu.

10 food samples will be taken from each block

According to this new guidelines of the state government, joint teams of Education and Food Security Department will conduct surprise inspection of minimum 10 council schools every month from each development block. During this period, samples of cooked food prepared in the kitchen will be sealed and sent to authorized government laboratories for testing.

Bacteria and adulteration will be investigated

The food samples will be thoroughly examined in the lab. This will mainly check for harmful bacteria like E-coli or any other infection. Besides, adulteration in oil, spices and grains used in food will also be investigated.

There will also be strict monitoring of milk and fruit distribution

The Mid Day Meal Authority has also increased the monitoring of milk and fruits given to children as per the menu. During surprise inspection in many schools, it was found that children were not getting milk in prescribed quantity or fruits were not being distributed at all. Now strict instructions have been issued to stop this negligence.

Strict action will be taken if negligence is found

According to sources in the Office of the Director General of School Education, if the food of any school is found unsafe or below the standards in the lab test, then strictest action will be taken against those responsible for it. Under this, departmental and legal action will also be taken against the concerned supplier, cooks or negligent school administration.

To make food safety foolproof, schools have been asked to follow the hygiene protocols of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Apart from this, it has been made mandatory for the school management committee members or teachers to taste the food at least half an hour before serving it to the children and record the same in the register.
