Middlesbrough have pressed on with their ambitious summer recruitment by completing the permanent signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Ashley Phillips. The England Under-21 international has joined the Riverside Stadium on a long-term five-year contract, becoming the eighth addition to Kim Hellberg’s squad.

Permanent move for Spurs youngster

Middlesbrough have officially announced Phillips’ arrival from Tottenham Hotspur, with the highly regarded defender signing a five-year deal at the Riverside. The 21-year-old, who moved to Spurs from Blackburn Rovers in 2023 for a reported £2 million, has headed to Teesside in pursuit of regular first-team football after being unable to break into the senior side in North London.

Phillips spoke of his delight at making the move and looked back on the path he has taken through the English leagues. “I got some great experience at a young age with Blackburn. I then experienced what it's like to be a Premier League player at Tottenham,” Phillips told the club website. “I think I've developed myself into a good player during my loans, but there's more to come from me. I'm very excited to be here. Hopefully we can achieve great things together this season.”

Building on Championship experience

Although Phillips did not make a competitive first-team appearance for Tottenham, he has built up strong experience in the Championship through a number of useful loan spells. Most significantly, he had two separate spells with Stoke City, where he made the majority of his professional appearances. Overall, Phillips has made 119 career appearances, with 83 of them coming for the Potters.

Before his time at Stoke City, Phillips also spent a loan spell with Plymouth Argyle after joining them in January 2024. Having come through Blackburn Rovers’ highly respected academy, the England youth international had been tracked for some time by several Premier League clubs. Middlesbrough, however, secured his signature after agreeing a deal with Tottenham — as reported by The Athletic on August 6 — involving an initial fee of £7 million plus up to £13 million in possible add-ons and performance-related bonuses. His decision to commit his long-term future to Boro underlines his belief that the Riverside Stadium is the right place to realise his potential.

Boro’s ambitious summer rebuild

Phillips’ arrival is Middlesbrough’s eighth signing in what has been an exceptionally busy summer transfer window. After the disappointment of losing the Championship play-off final to Hull City in May, the club has moved quickly to strengthen all areas of the squad. Their summer business has brought in goalkeeper Radek Vitek, forwards Kyle Joseph and Will Lankshear, winger Jeremy Sarmiento, as well as midfield additions Sebastian Berhalter, Max Arfsten and Myles Peart-Harris.

This major outlay underlines the ambition at the Riverside as Boro target a return to the top flight for the first time since 2017. The club’s recruitment approach has centred on combining young potential with technical quality, and Phillips appears to fit that profile perfectly.

Looking ahead to the new season

Middlesbrough have already made an encouraging start to their competitive fixtures after beating Wrexham 1-0 in the Carabao Cup last Saturday. That victory gave the squad a lift ahead of their league opener, and the arrival of Phillips — the second Tottenham player to complete a permanent move to the Riverside this summer after academy product Will Lankshear also signed a five-year deal — adds further momentum to the positive mood around the club.
