Enzo Fernandez did not receive the best welcome back from Chelsea supporters.

The 25-year-old was granted an extended break after reaching the World Cup final with Argentina, a match in which he was sent off.

That red card came after he had scored the equaliser in the semi-final against England and celebrated by cupping his ears in front of the fans.

Fernandez returned to training at Cobham this week, but there had been intense speculation surrounding his future.

That period ended without any offers arriving for him, and Chelsea now expect the player to stay at the club until at least next summer.

It is still unclear how firmly that position will be tested, but Fernandez did not get a particularly warm reception on his return to Stamford Bridge.

He was named among the substitutes for the club's final pre-season match against Real Sociedad on Saturday afternoon.

As his name was announced over the tannoy before the players came out for the warm-up, a scattering of boos could be heard from supporters who had taken their seats early.

Fernandez then worked alongside Argentina team-mate Valentin Barco as the pair went through stretching drills.

Barco was slapped by Bellingham in that World Cup semi-final clash after the Argentine had angered the England players by running onto the pitch and celebrating in front of them despite being an unused substitute.
