All indications continue to point towards Max Eberl remaining at FC Bayern. The sporting director has now spoken publicly for the first time about reports of a possible contract extension and confirmed that discussions have taken place with the Munich club.
For the past few days, signs have increasingly suggested that Eberl will stay with the German record champions for the long term. The 52-year-old is currently under contract until 2027, but that deal could be extended ahead of time.
Speaking during the Telekom Cup on MagentaTV, Eberl addressed his future for the first time. He confirmed that the matter has already been discussed with the club’s leadership.
“We’ve also talked about what my future might hold, but I think that will be clarified by the end of August, and then we’ll see how things go from there,” said the Bayern chief.
With that, Eberl at least indirectly backed the latest media reports. Those reports say the Executive Committee has already approved an extension in principle. It is also understood that during the trip to Asia, the sporting director was informed that the club basically intends to continue with him.
The next important date is 25 August. That is when FC Bayern’s supervisory board is due to meet and give its approval to the planned extension.
Only after that are the two sides expected to move into concrete contract negotiations. According to information from Sky, the Munich club wants to extend Eberl’s deal by another two years, taking it through 2029.
Eberl has been sporting director at FC Bayern since March 2024. After leaving RB Leipzig earlier than expected, he initially signed a contract in Munich that runs until 2027.
At times, his work had come under scrutiny. But the mood around the 52-year-old has changed noticeably since then. In particular, the club is said to view this summer’s early squad planning positively, along with the team’s development on the pitch under Vincent Kompany.
The extension has still not been officially finalised. Even so, Eberl’s comments make it clear that both sides are already in active talks over a joint future. By the end of August, the way could finally be open for a new contract running until 2029.
