Bar Council of India (BCI) President and BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra has apologized to law students after the convocation ceremony controversy at NALSAR University. BCI President Manan Mishra had barred the State Bar Council from enrolling final year students of the 2026 batch of NALSAR University as lawyers. As the controversy over the matter escalated, Mishra first gave clarification but now he has apologized to the students.

Manan Mishra has issued a letter on the occasion of Independence Day and apologized to the students. Actually, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant was to attend the convocation ceremony of NALSAR University but the students there had opposed him. It was after this action of the students that Manan Mishra took the suicidal step.

What did Maman Mishra say in his apology?

Although Maman Mishra has not directly named NALSAR University or the controversy in his apology, he has mentioned recent incidents in it. In the statement, he said, 'If anything to the current controversy, any of my words or letters have hurt the sentiments of our law students, then I am truly sorry and I apologize for the same. There should be no hesitation in apologizing. Expressing regret is not a matter of honor or ego. It's simply recognizing that the feelings and concerns of our students matter.'

They were demanding an apology from BCI president Manan Kumar Mishra for making objectionable comments against law students and teachers of the university.

Students took on BCI

Student Bar Council, the elected student body of NALSAR, objected to Manan Mishra's remarks in which he had said that 'some teachers and outsiders are playing an important role in provoking innocent students.' The BCI on Thursday directed all state bar councils not to enroll any graduate of the 2026 batch of NALSAR University of Law as advocates until further orders. However, the directive was withdrawn within hours after widespread criticism.

Allegations unprofessional, baseless

The Student Bar Council said, 'We accept the withdrawal of the letters and the termination of the grounds for action. However, despite this, it is important for us to register our condemnation of this incident. The student council termed the language of BCI's letters as highly objectionable, saying they referred to factionalism and dirty politics within the university and alleged that teachers were confusing, misleading and instigating students.

The students said that these allegations of BCI are unprofessional, baseless and without any basis. Making such claims against members of the University community merely for the peaceful expression of legitimate dissent is inappropriate and reflects bad faith.
