New Delhi: A big update has come out regarding the ODI World Cup 2027. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering a change in the start date of the tournament. According to reports, the 2027 World Cup can be started on 2 October 2027 i.e. the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. However, ICC has not yet officially confirmed this date.

Why is there discussion of starting on Gandhi Jayanti?

The 2027 ODI World Cup is being hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. In such a situation, the idea of ​​starting the tournament on the day of Gandhi Jayanti holds special significance. Mahatma Gandhi had deep connections with South Africa. He spent almost two decades of his life there and during this time his thoughts got a new direction.

Gandhi is known worldwide for his message of peace and non-violence. In such a situation, starting one of the biggest events of cricket on his birthday is being seen as a symbolic message.

Earlier the tournament was to start from October 8

According to the initial schedule, the World Cup was to start from 8 October 2027. Earlier, there was a plan to hold practice matches from 1st to 7th October. Now if the new plan is approved then the main tournament chart will be changed and the matches can start from October 2. At present the final is expected to be held on 21 November 2027. In such a situation, the tournament can last for about 50 days.

Competitions will be played in three countries

The 2027 World Cup matches will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. A total of 12 venues have been selected. In South Africa, matches will be held in eight cities including Johannesburg, Centurion, Cape Town and Durban. Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls of Zimbabwe have also been hosted. Windhoek, Namibia will also be a major center of the tournament.

The format of the World Cup has changed

This time the format of the tournament has also been changed. The three lowest ranked teams will play the super series first. After this the winning team will participate in the main competition. The matches will be conducted by dividing the 12 teams into two groups, after which there will be the Super Seven, Semi-Final and Final stages.

10 teams including India have qualified so far. The remaining four teams will be decided through qualifiers. If ICC's new plan is approved, then the World Cup will start from October 2 with a special message.
